Seed Technology
Seed Technology:
The role of seed technology is to protect the biological entity from the seed and to ensure its well-being.
Quan, 1973: Study of Seed Production, Maintenance, Quality and Conservation.
Frazier, 1975: Seed technology "Ways to improve the genetic and physical characteristics of seeds. It involves a variety of activities such as development, diagnosis and distribution, production, processing, storage and seed certification.
Seed technology includes the development of advanced crop varieties, their evaluation and release, production, processing, seed storage, seed testing, seed quality control, seed certification, seed marketing, distribution and seed research. Seed production, seed handling is based on modern botany and agricultural sciences.
Nature:
It is a multidisciplinary science that includes numerous disciplines such as:
- Development of advanced types
- appraisal
- Release
- Production
- Processing
- Warehouse
- Trial
- Certificate / Quality Control
- Warehouse
- Marketing and distribution
- Seed pathology
- Seed Biology
- Seed Physiology

India is a vast country with diverse soils and has different agro-climatic zones due to which crops are grown all year round. Overall, most seed crops are grown during the kharif season. However, most vegetable crops are grown in the Rabi season and have better quality seeds than the Kharif crop. Indian farmers can practice with multiple cropping systems.
Farmers can choose different crops like cereals, pulses, vegetables, fiber crops, etc. in these three seasons, namely Kharif, Rabi and summer.
With the development of agriculture, the Government of India, following the recommendations and recommendations of the National Commission for Agriculture, has decided to set up a Department of Seed Technology in Agricultural Universities and ICAR Institute in India. As a result, the Department of Seed Technology was launched nationwide with the following core objectives.
- Teaching Badge Technology Course.
- Research on seed production / processing / analysis.
- Strengthen research on seed technology.
- Provide training to people involved in production, processing, testing, etc.
Seed technology goals:
- Sharp multiplication: increase in agricultural production.
- Timely delivery: New varieties should be available on time.
- Seed quality is guaranteed: good vigor.
- Reasonable Price: The price of seeds must be low to reach the average farmer.
The role of seed technology:
- Festerter (1975) explained the following role of improved seeds.
- Vector of new technology
- A primary source of safe food
- The main way to secure crop production in less favorable areas.
- Moderate and rapid recovery of agriculture in the event of a natural disaster
Condition
India is considered a developed country in terms of seed sector. By the amount of seeds we produce and distribute, we are more than many (Western) countries in this trade. The Indian seed industry currently consists of two national organizations (NSC and SFCI), 12 state seed companies, about 150 large private seed companies, 19 state seed certification agencies and 86 notified seed testing laboratories. ۔
Seed Production Area: India
The estimated requirement till 2010 is 126.55 quintals. The amount of buffer stock under seed security programs in India is as follows (Singh, 1990).
Approved
- Suicide Cultures 5
- Hybrid 10%
- Foundation Badge 25
- Breeder badge 50%
